How Did My End of Year Gaming Goal End? Not Well.

Back on the 19th of November, I jotted down a short list of four games and set a goal to complete them before the end of 2015. Now, here we are on January 1st (Happy new year, by the way) and, truth be told, I barely touched them. Funny how that works, right?

If you didn’t click the link above, the games were Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth on 3DS, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride on DS, as well as Toukiden: Kiwami and Until Dawn on PS4. The only “maybe” in there was Toukiden, as it’s pretty friggin’ long, but I was confident that I’d end up completing at least three of them.

But zero? What happened?

One excuse is college, but the Fall semester ended on December 11th. What really got in the way was a combination of Black Friday sales, me wanting to knock out a few of the bigger 2015 releases for my Games of the Year post, and getting a new Playstation Vita.

Rather than completing the games listed above, however, I managed to finish up Grow Home, Tales from the Borderlands, Cibele, Her Story, Undertale, Axiom Verge, and played a pretty ridiculous amount of Rocket League and Destiny in between. I’d say that’s a fair trade off.

With 2015 in the bag, what’s in store for 2016? I… have no idea, really.

I have The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD pre-ordered, and I know there’s a metric shit-ton of interesting JRPGs on the horizon for 3DS, but part of me wants to take it back a notch and focus on the games I already paid for and just never got around to.

I’m still mucking about in Batman: Arkham Knight, and according to this random GameFAQs walkthrough I just pulled up, I’m on chapter 56 of 87. I’m not sure if I want to go through the new DLC immediately after, but I could definitely use the free space on my PS4. I’m also in the middle of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Uncharted: Golden Abyss on Vita.

On top of that, I ended up with Tales of Zesteria, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (yes, again), Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Rise of the Tomb Raider over Christmas. I also bought a friend’s copy of Fallout 4, and spent the remainder of my holiday fun money on Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture (PS4), SOMA (PS4), Criminal Girls: Invite Only (Vita), Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters (Vita), Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines (Vita), and Corpse Party: Blood Drive (Vita). Needless to say, I have plenty to keep me busy for well over an entire year.

My goal this year is to be smarter about the games I buy, and to only buy games I know I’ll play immediately–or I know will have a limited run. Otherwise I can wait it out with sheer willpower (Flying Spaghetti Monster willing, of course) and pick the same games up later during a good sale, like Black Friday.

Games aren’t going anywhere, and I have a ton I’d still like to work through. Setting this goal back in November was supposed to keep me motivated, but I’m easily side-tracked. Hell, I’m sure in two months I’ll be talking about diving in to something else. But it’s good to set goals, even if you don’t succeed.

What are your gaming plans this year?

  1. This is why I don’t ever set myself specific targets because I know I’ll never achieve them. Sometimes you’ve just got to go with the flow, even if you do occasionally shift off to differing gaming tangents.
