Weekend Gaming: What are You Playing?

ffxiv

The weekend is upon us once again, and hopefully you’ll be ending your busy week with a little (or a lot) of gaming.

After a 2-week health scare with our oldest cat (she’s 12), we received some great news today and she’s well on her way to being 100% again. The stress of that combined with college classes made for something awful, so I’m definitely winding down this weekend with a game I’ve been dying to jump back in to for the longest time.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is having a free login campaign until April 13th, offering returning players up to 96 free hours of play time. The offer is a bit confusing, as you actually get four consecutive days to play from the moment you log in for the first time–not 96 hours of your choosing.

Returning players will most likely need to reinstall the game, but also log in to the client to begin the lengthy update process. It seems odd to start the promotion at the exact moment you log in to update the game, as that seems counterproductive, but hey, free time is free time.

Still, I can see lots of folks jumping back in to that one; myself included.

Now that my The Witch and the Hundred Knight review is up, I’ve been meaning to go back and finish Tales of Zestiria. I’m so close too, but now I’m sucked back in to FFXIV. It’s so good!

This is actually my third attempt at the game, but I don’t say that in a negative way. I’ve really enjoyed it each time, but I was also playing WoW and had no desire to pay for 2 different MMO subscriptions. Now that I’ve given up on WoW, I’m hoping to finally make it beyond level 42 and see where the story goes.

FFXIV does a lot that I enjoy, namely auto-looting and having the ability to level every single job class and profession on one character. It also runs very well on PS4 and I can cross-play with the folks I know playing on PS3 and PC, which is always a plus.

My first time playing I rolled a Summoner and had a lot of fun, but this time I just couldn’t get in to it for some reason. The last time I played I was a Dragoon, which I had planned to go back to, but I wanted to try something different. This time I went Archer, with the intent of going Bard in the long run. Archer has some neat abilities so far and the rotation is pretty forgiving, but I still have the itch to go back to Dragoon. We’ll see how things go.

If you’re looking for something new this weekend, Playstation is having a really nice flash sale.

I’m tempted to snag the first two Hyperdimension Neptunia ReBirth games on Vita for $9 each. I love me some quirky JRPGs and I’ve been meaning to snatch up the ReBirth series since I picked up a Vita last year.

There’s some really good stuff on sale overall, like Fatal Frame 1-3 for 99 cents each, which feels criminal. That’s definitely a steal. Sword Art Online: Re: Hollow Fragment is dirt cheap right now on PS4, which I’ve really enjoyed as an SAO fan. Lots of visual novel games and random JRPGs up for grabs too, if you’re looking for a cheap way to kill the weekend.

So how about you? What are you playing this weekend?

  1. Many versions of Phantasy Star Online. Either the original, the Gamecube version, Blue Burst, Universe, or PSO2. Just depends on what happens to get the ol’ clicky clicky when I sit down.

I’m glad to hear about the free 96 hours for FFXIV. That’s pretty nice of them. I doubt I’d be able to go back to my WHM, though. All I remember from my last pop in was looking at my hotbars, realizing I had absolutely no idea what any of it did, and floundering around the final quest area. Good times.

      1. Yep! I like the idea of becoming a Bard because, well, that’s part of what I do out in the real world.

I just don’t know if I’d have the time to dedicate to something I can’t bring the missus along on. We always play together when it’s possible, if not, she’s content getting the story.

      2. If you have a halfway decent PC that will run FFXIV, it’s cross-platform with the Playstation versions. You two could play together (if that’s an option, of course)!

MMOs definitely require time if you plan on doing anything major at max level, but they’re also nice ways to unwind and just dick around with friends. If you *do* decide to bring Max Devi back from the dead, shoot me a message. We all still play on Zalera =)

  2. I won’t get a TON of game time this weekend between work, and a trade event. But I do plan on trying to shake off some ring rust in both Super Smash Bros IV, and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. I was never going to be tournament pro level at either, but I’ve let myself go. Friends who could barely hit me before, are now clowning my ass. Torn Banner’s next game is looking pretty sweet too. So all the more reason to practice up!

    1. That’s what drew me away from picking up any fighter at full price. I just can’t commit to one game that much and remain competitive. $15 or so for a solid amount of offline content and the *potential* to play online if I want is my sweet spot. Picked up Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN and BlazBlue Chronophantasma Extend on PS4 for $15 each and didn’t feel bad that I got destroyed online. $60 would have been instant regret lol.

  3. I’m itching to go back to Mass Effect, I just need epic SciFi in my life atm… but I don’t know if I’ll have the time, because kids and work and stuff. Anyhow, I think I can squeeze in a level or two of Bubble Mania, so there’s always that. :)

  4. Obviously you know what my weekend consists of: Pokemon event for a free Magikarp card, otomes, and spamming FFXIV. I just did a hilarious run of Tam-Tara where the healer ordered my ass to mass pull so we completed the dungeon in about 6 pulls. And quoted Hellsing Abridged the entire time through.

I might give myself a break and pop in one of my backlog titles so I don’t get too worn out from FFXIV spam. And as far as the flash sale, I’m planning on the three Fatal Frame titles, Alice: Madness Returns, and Silent Hill. I can’t play them til I get my PS3 back but the price is too good to pass up.

    1. I wanted to review Senran Kagura on PS4, and actually got a code for it, but it turned out to be for the EU PSN and not NA. When I emailed XSEED’s PR I was told they were out of NA codes, so that was a bummer. One day I’ll pick it up!

  5. Unfortunately I didn’t do much gaming over the weekend. My daughter’s birthday was Sunday and I spent all day on the grill making burgers, and hot dogs. When I finally had a chance to relax it was after 9pm and I just wanted to sleep by then. I played a little bit of The Division and got my main dude up to level 25.

I also played a bit of Warrame over the weekend. I finally got my hands on Trinity and Saryn Prime. I even fought level 100 enemies for the first time and wreaked their ass with Frost :].
