I’m a day late with this week’s edition of It’s the Freakin’ Weekend, but I was out of town yesterday driving back to South Carolina from Maryland. I have family in town until Tuesday, so I don’t know how much gaming I’ll be getting in, if any.
I played a ton of The Last Blade 2 on Vita during yesterday’s 9 hour road trip. It’s a solid SNK fighter, especially if you’re more in to the weapon combat feel of Samurai Shodown than, say, King of Fighters or Fatal Fury. Don’t let its original 1998 release date fool you either — it’s well made and definitely withstands the test of time, in my opinion.
Since I was away from any sort of wifi hotspot, I mainly played through the story mode a bunch of times. The Last Blade 2 does support online and local Ad-hoc multi-player, but thankfully none of the trophies are associated with it. A majority of them are unlocked by beating story mode with each of the characters, with one in particular requiring a clean clear without using a continue. The only other two are both tied to Time Attack, so it’s a doable 100% — there’s no platinum trophy.
For $14.99 you get the PS Vita and PS4 versions, as well as a theme for each console. The Vita theme displays a few different static images as you scroll through your UI windows, plays the game’s theme song in the background, and changes the notification button to The Last Blade 2’s signature leaf icon.
GameFly shipped Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus on Vita, but I haven’t received it yet. If I get it tomorrow I may check it out, but I’m more focused on spending time with family than chopping up dudes as a bunch of busty ninja girls.

Cheap Boss Attack 
I’ll be playing the same thing I played last weekend… Dark Souls 3 :).
I just finished my 8th playthrough of the game with my 5th different character. I’m pushing 200 hours of playtime and I’ve already planned my next character build. I’ll probably stick to using my mage in new game plus 3 this weekend since I’ve already made it pretty far with him :).

Lol. It’s hard to stop playing Dark Souls. Every time I think I’m done with the game I make a new character.

I think if I had a more normal schedule right now I’d be playing DS3, for sure. But with only an hour here, an hour there, I know I’d either get sidetracked or be tempted to start over to remember how everything works.

I’m hoping I get the chance to dive back into FFIV! I didn’t have any time last weekend of week to play even a bit. One day I will finish grinding in the Giant. I have high hopes :)
I have a PSP and I considered getting the Vita. Hope you enjoy family time! I have to drive to north Jersey in a few hours for a friend’s birthday dinner (I’m in the Philadelphia area), but I’m hoping to play IV when I get back, do some late night gaming.

The Vita is an excellent piece of portable hardware, it’s just the memory cards that make it borderline unaffordable to most. I got a 64gb card, the biggest available, for $94. That’s more than the cost of a Nintendo 2DS during one of their many sales!
Even still, I have no regrets. I use my Vita more than just about any console in my home.
Even being from Baltimore, I’ve only been to Philly once in my life. I have relatives in Belmar and Flanders, New Jersey though, so I visit there at least once a year.

I’ve actually only been to Baltimore a few times! I went to Otakon way back in 2003 and the Distant Worlds Final Fantasy concert more than five years ago (there was one in NY we went to, too).
Wow, well I did spend more for my iPhone to have more space so I can see the advantage in it. I do want to get a 3DS at some point (or possibly just a 2DS) so that I can play/review Bravely Default. If I recall I only actually bought my PSP so that I could play Crisis Core. That’s how they get me to buy systems…release games that I have to play on them. Same reason I bought the PlayStation so many years ago. If it’s a good system or epic game it’s more than worth the money.

I rarely, if ever, use the 3D feature on my 3DS, and if you’re in the same position the 2DS is perfectly fine. It may not fold up in a clamshell position, but it gets the job done and it’s less than half the price of the 3DS — plus it either comes with Yo-Kai Watch (which is great) or Mario Kart 7 pre-loaded.
I went to Otakon in 2000 or 2001, before I moved out of Maryland. It was a lot of fun!

I don’t I really need 3D tbh. I used to really like 3D movies, but now I can take them or leave them. I was actually curious about the benefits of the 3DS and if they outweighed the cost like if other things were different, but if it’s just the 2D vs. 3D option, I know what I’ll go with. Thanks for the insight!

Yep, it’s just the physical model itself and the lack of 3D that’s different, I believe. I find the 3D feature on 3DS slows games down, especially with more detailed RPGs like Bravely Default. The 3D looked good, but the framerate wasn’t nearly as smooth as it was in 2D.

Senran Kagura 2 is on my GameFly queue, but Shinovi Versus is my first experience with the series. Pretty sure I’ll enjoy it.
