25 years after Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad made the world a safer place, The Swarm has arrived to put an end to these better times. Stepping in to his father’s colossal shoes, Marcus’s son JD, along with his friends Del and Kait, take the fight to the big uglies not in hopes of bringing peace back to the world, but simply to survive another day.
Today’s premier of the official Gears of War 4 launch trailer features a pretty fantastic cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” performed by Lissie. With survival being the name of the game, and the world seemingly in ruins, I couldn’t think of a more perfect song to accompany the action.
Gears of War has always been about the strong bond of friendship and family, and the fourth installment appears to be no different. The catchphrase “never fight alone” has never been more meaningful either, since Gears of War 4 supports the ability to cross-play with others between Xbox One and the Windows 10 platform.
Supporting the new Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, purchasing Gears of War 4 will allow you to play on your Xbox One and your PC, where you’ll share all of your save files and Achievements through Xbox Live. As mentioned above, you can play with your friends on Xbox One or PC without having to worry about who buys the game for which platform, since you’ll receive both for the price of one.
Gears of War 4 launches October 11th, however Gears of War: Ultimate Edition owners will receive early access to the game on October 7th.
As seen at the end of the video clip, you can get a pretty nasty Zombie Dom multi-player skin, along with Old Marcus and Tomorrow Anya, and their respective golden weapons, as pre-order incentives. One could argue there’d be nothing left of Dom after his “incident” in Gears of War 3, but hey, I’m glad to see one half of the greatest bromance in gaming return in one form or another.
If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, GameStop is currently running a promotion where pre-ordering Gears of War 4 nets you $20 off any new (meaning not pre-owned, not necessarily a new release) Xbox One title.
I wish Overwatch had that Play Anywhere feature. I play on PS4 and wouldn’t mind trying out the PC servers, but paying for another copy puts me off.

I think only the co-op features of Gears are Play Anywhere, not the competitive, since it would put the console players at a disadvantage over the PC for obvious reasons — keyboard and mouse for superior aiming, better performance, etc.
