It’s the Freakin’ Weekend! So What are You Playing?

I stayed up late last night watching the Nintendo Switch presentation, but that’s another post for another day. Later today, perhaps. I will say it’s been a happy Switchmas, and with March 3rd looming in the distance, I’m more motivated than ever to tackle this backlog.

What are your gaming plans this weekend?

I’m in an interesting position where I’ve just finished a major game, leaving me free to jump in to something new. I’ve been chipping away at the last labyrinth in Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth on 3DS, but since the dungeon portions of the game aren’t heavy on narrative I can continue playing it at my leisure without fear of getting lost.

I checked out a new indie arcade racer on PS4 called Drive! Drive! Drive! that offers a totally unique take on the genre, but just doesn’t feel executed in an enjoyable way. You basically control three different cars racing on three different tracks simultaneously. The AI will control the two that you’re not focusing on, but they purposefully drive poorly to keep you frantically switching between them.

When I stumbled on the game’s PlayStation Store page, I was immediately intrigued by the overall concept. It has a neat low-poly aesthetic, similar to Firewatch, and the pure chaos-nature of the gameplay is incredibly appealing. But it’s just too difficult to make progress because of the random nature of the AI racers. One moment I’m pulling ahead, but in the three seconds it took me to turn a corner in another car, I was already back in last place.

It’s definitely an interesting concept, but I don’t think I’ll be revisiting it anytime soon. The two hours I spent were enough to know that it’s just not for me.

I could pick up my Vita and finish off Persona 4 Golden? There’s always World of Final Fantasy on PS4?

But after last night’s Switch event, I’m feeling exceptionally Nintendo today. I’m thinking that I may try and hammer out Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE before the Switch release in March, or diving in to the copy of Paper Mario: Color Splash that I got for Christmas. Or maybe even juggling both, who knows?

According to HowLongToBeat‘s website, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE’s average completion time is between 48-62 hours, with Paper Mario: Color Splash hovering around 30. We’re exactly 7 weeks from the Switch’s March 3rd release, and pending I don’t become sidetracked (which I’m known to do quite often) I could more than likely take down both of them.

I’m in an RPG mood, and while I’m still riding high from Fire Emblem: Awakening I might as well hop in to the Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem cross-over, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.

I guess I have my weekend plans sorted, then.

Outside of gaming, I rented volume six of Saga, volume one of Monstress, the first three volumes of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, and the first three volumes of The FADE OUT. I’m beyond excited to finally have the latest volume of Saga in my hands, which has quickly become my favorite comic series of all time (sorry Flash!). Hopefully I’ll knock that out later on today.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE is an interesting story about gods coming back to the realm of mortals every couple hundred years, and this time they’re disguising themselves as over-the-top glam-rock stars that explode heads with a snap of their fingers. I actually rented the series already, but it was nearing the end of the fall semester and I happened to be a bit too busy to give them a proper read.

What about you folks? What are you getting in to this weekend?

  1. I liked the Persona parts of Persona Q, but never finished it because Etrian Odyssey doesn’t click with me.

This weekend I am working, but if I get some free time I might give my neglected 3DS some love. I downloaded 7th Dragon for it earlier today.

    1. Yeah, I genuinely love the Persona 3 and 4 cast, so the humor and combat is fun. Each dungeon gets a bit unnecessarily long as they open up, and I nearly stopped playing during the Evil Spirit Club labyrinth. Their FOEs were frustrating and the puzzles were entirely too vague. I buckled down, looked up a walkthrough, and followed it until I was out lol. Now I like it again.

      7th Dragon looks neat!

  2. I wish I could be playing Zelda, but I guess I’ll have to settle for Fallout 4’s Far Harbor this weekend.

I still haven’t played Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I might end up playing that instead :).

    1. Man, I’ve watched and re-watched that Breath of the Wild trailer so many times. It looks incredible.

I love Zelda. LOVE it. So I don’t mind dropping $300 on a Switch to play it there instead of Wii U. Can’t wait.

  3. I must admit, I am pretty jelly of those awesome reading plans you’ve got! :P
I’ve only read volume 1 of Saga so far but I’m in love and eager to check out more of it. Monstress is one that has caught my eye as well. Happy reading and have a good weekend! :)

    1. You should check your local library and county branches through their website! Ours carries TONS of Image TPBs.

I’ve been looking forward to Monstress for a while, but someone had it checked out for the last 2 months. Finally managed to snag a copy at the library.

Have a good weekend as well!

      1. Thanks! :)
Yeah, I’ve definitely been putting the local library to good use lately. Haven’t seen Monstress there yet, but it may just be checked out like at your library. I know a lot of people are reading it now. :)

  4. I’m on Evil Within right now, proving to be a bit of a pain to play. I want to enjoy it, but I’m struggling to.
How is The Wicked and the Divine? I got the first volume for a friend of mine at Christmas, he seems to be enjoying it.

    1. I’ve only read the first two issues in volume one and it’s pretty okay. Not blown away at all, but it’s not bad. I’ll let you know for sure once I’ve muscled through all three volumes on my desk.

Good luck with Evil Within. I hear it’s a tough one, particularly the latter half of the game where you’re consistently out of ammunition.

  5. Enjoy your gaming time! I really need to catch up on Saga. I still have only read Vol 1…

I managed to score Switch/BoTW CE preorders on a work break today. It felt like a true Switchmas miracle! I’m finding it hard to focus on other games with all my Nintendo hype, but I want to beat FFIV this weekend. The wise Shameful Narcissist told me I’m over 2/3rds through the game now so I think I can do it!

    1. Nice score! I missed out on all of the Breath of the Wild CE’s while I was out, and Nintendo has already said they’re in limited quantity… because of course they did. It’s the Nintendo thing to do. I definitely want that version though, so I’ll keep an eye out in case more show up. I’m sure at least half of them were purchased by resellers, which is infuriating.

I really wanted to pre-order the ugly colored Switch, but ended up with the grey one. I may change my pre-order if more open up at Best Buy. I have a gift card for there, so I’m at the mercy of the double B.

I’m feeling the Nintendo hype as well, so I’m jumping in to some Wii U tonight. Have fun with FFIV and hopefully you pull through it here soon!

      1. Thanks! Nintendo is being really stupid again and limiting this. It’s a shame because it only hurts loyal Zelda fans and benefits those evil reseller people. I was 2nd in line and the store I was at only had 4 for preorder… Seriously Nintendo, make more of these! I’ll let you know if I happen to stumble upon another one though. :)

    2. I know I’ve mentioned this to a few other people in the comments, but check your local library and their surrounding branches on their website. It’s free and they usually carry tons of comics. You can even have them ship comics to your local branch. That’s how I read ALL of my comics, since I only really spend my fun money on video games. It’s kept me going for at least a year!

    1. If you don’t mind borrowing, just use your local library! That’s what I’ve been doing for over a year and they carry TONS of great comics! If your local branch doesn’t have them, use their website and browse the catalog for your entire county. They can then ship whatever you want right to your local branch. That’s only if you’d rather not own physical copies =).

        1. I hear you. It’s pretty incredible! I also highly recommend checking out the series Low. Lots of great characters, particularly the leading ladies, and an incredible dream-like aesthetic. I love it.

I ended up buying my girlfriend a really awesome The Stalk t-shirt for Christmas. I’d like the big Lying Cat statue they sell as well.

        1. I went through the core game on Xbox before any of the DLC came out, then picked up the Game of the Year edition on PS4 after selling the Xbox copy. I need to start over completely lol. That’s literally the only thing that’s prevented me from jumping in immediately.
