It’s the Freakin’ Weekend! So What are You Playing?

Friday! Video games! Let’s Talk!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still my primary focus, which isn’t surprising given how massive the game is. I’ve just taken down my first Divine Beast (Ruta) and have yet to climb each of the map towers, so that’s part of my goal this weekend. The other goal is to hunt down more shrines so I can increase my heart pool in order to get the Master Sword. I’m… halfway to the required amount.

Since the last weekend wrap-up, I’ve learned that I can shoot animals with fire arrows to cook the meat immediately, surf down mountains on top of my shield, and toss food into bodies of water to attract fish. I’ve also found out the hard way that equipping metal weapons and armor during a lightning storm is a good way to get electrocuted. This game never ceases to amaze me.

If I had to guess, I’d say I’ve been playing Breath of the Wild for nearly 20 hours. I’ve barely scratched the surface of the story and there’s still a majority of the map left uncovered. It will most likely take me a few months to finish it, and that’s just fine. I don’t really want it to end.

My copy of Persona 5 just shipped from Best Buy, so I will be taking a Zelda break here soon. It won’t be any sort of major hiatus, since I’m making it a point to at least jump in every day to scan my amiibo. With so many major releases this year it’s been tough trying to juggle what I’ve picked up.

Adding to that, my rental copy of MLB The Show 17 should be here today, which couldn’t have come at a worse time. As a diehard baseball fan, I look forward to playing The Show every year. Jammed between Zelda and Persona 5, though, there’s a good chance I’ll only play it for a few hours before sending it back.

Outside of Breath of the Wild, I did spend quite a bit of time with Sumo Digital’s new platformer Snake Pass on Nintendo Switch. I’ve already reviewed it here, so I’ll spare you most of the details. The short version is that it’s a beautiful looking game with a novel concept but ultimately suffers from its own frustrating approach to locomotion.

Another Switch indie (or Nindie, I guess they’re calling them) I’ve been playing is Has-Been Heroes by the folks at Frozenbyte. It’s a roguelike RPG that’s a bit like Plants vs. Zombies, in which your band of aging heroes remains on the left side of the screen while enemies swarm in from the right. Each hero can only attack enemies in their given lanes, but these rules don’t apply to spells (which can be cast on anything). Attacking an enemy pauses the game, giving you a chance to place your heroes into different lanes. This strategy not only opens the enemy up for combo attacks, but it’s a great defensive maneuver to save a hero teetering on the verge of death.

As a roguelike, Has-Been Heroes is heavy on the randomization. Maps are randomized, boss order is randomized, and items acquired in the wild are randomized (based on what you’ve unlocked). It’s a very tough game, but a rewarding one. Even failures feel good, as you’re consistently expanding the amount of spells and items that could potentially drop in subsequent playthroughs.

Has-Been Heroes has been my go-to Switch game when I want a break from Breath of the Wild. It’s also enjoyable in short bursts, which is ideal if I need a brief homework distraction or just want to go sit out on the porch with the cats for an hour. If I weren’t so invested in Zelda, or perhaps if I’d already finished it, I could see me spending most of my Switch time with Has-Been Heroes until the next wave of games come along.

In a bit of disheartening news, I’ve been going back to Anima: Gate of Memories on PS4 from time to time, but I think I’m ready to throw in the towel. There are some neat ideas floating around in this budget RPG. Mostly, though, the combat isn’t fun, the characters are bland, and it suffers from some pretty unfortunate camera controls during its required platforming segments. Some of the boss fights are also incredibly cheap. I’ve given Anima a fair shake and I’m just ready to put it behind me so I can begin working on its review.

What about you folks? What are you getting into this weekend?

  1. 90+ hours in, I’m still on Breath of the Wild. That said, I think this weekend will be the one where I finally buckle down and finish the main campaign. If I don’t do it then, I’ll probably just keep playing it without end >_>

      1. Yeah, it’s something they allow. Though the weekend came and went, and just as I was about to head to the final boss, I left the area because I didn’t want it to end T-T What have you done to me Nintendo!?!

BTW, would you like to share your articles in our FB group? We’re a growing community of gaming bloggers and we’d be thrilled to have more writers share and discuss their work. Just search for “Game Bloggers United” on Facebook.

        1. I don’t use Facebook outside of the messenger app (I’m at Twitter person), mostly just to keep in touch with distant family. But I do have an account. I’ll have a look at the community at some point. Thanks =)

    1. The thing that sucks about Persona 5 is that it releases at the end of my spring break, and then I’ll be swamped the last 3 weeks for finals. May hold off for summer break so I can give it my full attention, and just focus on Zelda in the meantime.

  2. I’m focusing on Mass Effect this weekend. I have almost as much time in Andromeda as I do Breath of The Wild. I only have one more Divine Beast to do btw :).

When I’m not in a Andromeda mood I’ll play some Pokemon Moon. Working on my second playthrough and loving it. I’m not really in a gaming mood this weekend so I’ll probably just keep watching the classic X-men cartoon that I used to watch as a kid. I just introduced my wife to it and she loves it so far.

    1. I’m glad you’re enjoying Andromeda. Some of the tougher enemies in Breath of the Wild are kicking my ass so I’m trying to finish more shrines to get better gear to drop. Extra hearts should help as well.

I loved the X-men cartoon as a kid. Great theme song.

  3. Nothing at all. I still need to max out my inventory in Breath of the Wild and do some sidequests, but that will have to wait, sadly!

Enjoy your time with the game. It’s a masterpiece.

  4. Sounds like you’re having some fun with so many different Switch games! I know Snake Pass has difficult controls and Has-Been Heroes is just difficult with its roguelike randomness. But I can’t help but be allured to them. I might try them out sometime. Otherwise, I’m currently playing through two visual novel bundle rereleases that came out for PS4 recently: Danganronpa 1.2 Reload and The Nonary Games. That’s like four games with murderous betrayers and desperate scenarios. Yea… My weekend of games won’t be crazy at all, haha.

    1. I *loved* Danganronpa on Vita, but never got around to the sequel. I hear great things about the Nonary Games trilogy too.

Has-Been Heroes has gotten progressively less enjoyable the more I play it. I’ve completely given up on Snake Pass.

      1. I love both of those series. This is just me double dipping on murder mystery visual novel goodness. For Danganronpa, I would definitely say that the 2nd one is a sequel that does the first one justice, without spoiling anything of course.

Sorry to hear you’re not having as much fun with those two games. Definitely helps me figure out what I want to do with them though.

        1. I have Danganronpa 2 on Vita, I’ve just not had the time for it. I’m not sure how much I’d enjoy a visual novel-style game on a home console, since it feels more natural on a handheld (like reading a book or something). How are you finding the transition?

          1. Hm, I played the first one on the PS Vita, so it’s not different at all for me. I’ve never minded though and have played other visual novel games like Ace Attorney and Steins;Gate on the TV. I guess I’m used to it. It actually works out better than handheld since I usually play VNs with my wife, so having it on the big screen actually benefits us since we can see the screen without peering over each other’s shoulder.

            1. Ah, yeah, I could see the TV being better if you’re playing with someone else. I’ve never tried one. I have Root Letter in my GameFly queue though (and genuinely enjoy VNs), so hopefully they send it my way soon and I’ll see how it all goes.

  5. You can get struck by lightning in BoTW? Awesome! I haven’t seen this happen yet, lol. I’m not that far actually. I just saved up enough rupees for my house and did the Shrine of Wisdom thing. Still no divine beasts and I’ve only climbed two towers. I’ve been wasting time cooking and beating up Bokoblins with a mop, haha. Oh and catching horses. It’s just so fun to wander around but I guess I should head to the Zora place and get some progression happening.

    1. Oh, it’ll happen! Give it time! I haven’t actually come across any area that lets me buy a house, or I could have just missed it. I’ve opened up maybe 5 of the areas, so roughly half the map. I have one horse–a blue and white spotted one named Rupert. I love him.

  6. I’ll likely jam on some Zelda after working tomorrow, and if I have any time over the weekend I’ll fire up some retro. I’m pretty excited about a nice piece of kit coming from across the pond. It may not come for a while with customs, and all of that. But if it’s even half as good as advertised, it is going to rock.

I hope everyone remembers to put away the metal weapons, and items during thunderstorms!

      1. It’s the SD2IEC v4 card reader. It’s from a small biz called Thefuturewas8bit.co.uk

Anyway, the creator recycled a bunch of broken C64, and C128 machines, and made the card readers out of the plastics from the original computer bezels. Each reader looks like a miniature Commodore 1541-Floppy Diskette drive.

But these aren’t ordinary SD card readers. The connector pins aren’t USB, they’re the connectors found on the back of your Commodore 64. Normally you would plug in your Disk or Tape drive to them. Instead, you can plug in the SD2IEC, and run files off of an SD card natively on your C64/128! With floppy disk drives wearing out, and the floppy disks housing many a great game deteriorating, some games, and drives are getting rarer. This allows Commodore fans, to run backups off of the SD card, and hopefully prolong the lives of their disk based games.

Plus rather than emulating the computer environment on a PC, you’re still playing your games on an authentic Commodore 64/128! So my hope is that it works as well as advertised. I plan to review it when it arrives. It has the potential to be a must own peripheral for Commodore gaming!

  7. I love games that give you your money’s worth. 20 hours in and still not half finished sounds like heaven to me especially with a game like that. I need to hunt down a Switch post haste so I can take a deep breath of the wild (omg I’ll leave now).

I’m kind of becoming obsessed with FF: Brave Exvius, and that’s never happened to me with a freemium game (a phrase coined by LightningEllen; I can take no credit). I’m still getting used to how everything works, and JUST figured out that I hadn’t been cashing in my rewards so I went from having only 700 gil to over 35k. Wish that could happen in real life.

The universe seems to be conspiring against me to play some of the numbered FFs. I was going to download a digital copy of FFXII to play on the PS3 I have because the laser is broken, but only the sequels are available in that format. Then I was going to play some FFV on Wednesday, but my controller no longer worked. I ordered two replacements on Amazon and I just got them today so hopefully this weekend, I can continue my great FF (re)play project. Oh, and I’m still working on my WOFF review.

    1. Yeah, BotW is no joke lol. Though I *think* you’ve left a joke in every reply today, so that has to count for something, right?

I downloaded Brave Exvius to my Galaxy Tab and didn’t play it much, but I liked what I played. Sucks you’re having a string of bad luck with your consoles and stuff. My PS3 controllers (both of them) have developed shorts in their USB ports so the slightest movement causes them to not take a charge from the console. It sucks. Even playing tethered to the PS3 doesn’t work since they need to be plugged in to the port. I thought it was the charging cable so I bought a replacement at GameStop and it does the same thing. So it has to be the controllers. Ugh.

      1. I was on a roll! No, no, don’t encourage me. They’ll only get worse :p

So…in console capers (which I’m planning on using as a post title), I got my controllers yesterday, and we went to the mall so I could return some shoes and do some shopping. We passed by the GameStop, and the games made us stop (see! It’s invading MY posts, too). They had PS3s for sale, and the 500GB was $150. I also found this adorable, little Spock figurine (Star Trek nerd, too. I prefer TNG, but I love Spock/Leonard Nimoy RIP ;_;) Soooo now I have a PS3, and my husband has a laser to replace in his. I am ready to go.

USB ports seem to be fickle creatures. I know the ones on my computer tend to fizzle out way too soon for my liking. Have you tried replacing the controllers? That might be an easier fix than what you thought. I got my PS2 controllers for $10 a piece. I know PS3 ones are more, but that might fix your issue.

        1. I was going to wait until I found myself wanting to play something on PS3 before digging around for replacement controllers. It’s just odd that BOTH would have the same issue, which is why I figured the charging cable was the culprit. Only it wasn’t. It shorts out the moment the controller jiggles, not at the end plugged in to the PS3, so it’s not the PS3 port. I’m at a loss, really.

Congrats on scoring your own PS3, though! At least now you can play FFXIII?

          1. It’s like how both my and my husband’s phones both had their SIM cards burn out at the same time (though I seriously suspect AT&T did something, because that’s way too coincidental).

Yup! Though now I’m kind of obsessed with Brave Exvius, and I’m not sure how to get out of that. Now that I have my PS controllers, I can finally play V hopefully this Wednesday. I swear the trials and tribulations…
