A Mid-Year Backlog Update

As of this posting, I’m currently sitting at 28 games completed for 2017 — far more than I anticipated. I started off the year committed to chipping away at my backlog, and outside of a handful of new releases and reviews, I’ve done just that. Go me.

With June coming to a close, I wanted to update my backlog by removing the games I’ve completed and adding in the few games I’ve acquired over the last six months. I also wanted to make a significant change by including my PC backlog.

A list of my 2017 game completions is available here, if you’re curious. I’ve also been posting them on Twitter as they occur.

To keep things as organized as possible, I’ll break everything down into four categories: Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The games are in no particular order and consist of ones I’ve yet to start, haven’t finished, or played on a different platform. This isn’t my entire collection — just games I’m intent on playing.

Some of the games listed here come by way of their respective console’s Virtual Console feature, notated by (VC).

Just writing this out pummeled me with anxiety! So. Many. Games. I guess that’s a good problem to have, but part of me feels like I’ll never play (let alone complete) more than half of these.

I’m certainly glad I buckled down this year and started making fewer game purchases outside of sales — granted I did buy a Nintendo Switch. It’s allowed me to focus on games I already paid for and finally make time for things I’ve been putting aside far too long. I’ll continue to do so throughout the year, so it’ll be interesting to see just how much I’ve chipped off come December 31st.

How is your backlog looking?

    1. Nah, like I mentioned in the post these are versions of certain games I’ve yet to finish. I played all three on 360 and PS3, but picked up the Collection remasters on Xbox One. Haven’t touched those yet, haha.

    1. Thanks! That’s what I’ve been doing as well. If it’s something I own that I *think* I might pick up for a rainy day, it goes to the bottom. The moment I think I’ll never be interested, it’s gone.

I have a stack of games ready to go on eBay as well speak, for this very reason! Used some of the funds already to take advantage of the Steam summer sale.

  1. The Tales series is great – a bit lengthy though, but mostly enjoyable jrpgs.

Drakengard / NieR series is another long one – I intend to eventually play it like this: D3 -> D1 -> D2 -> NieR -> NieR Automata.

Deus Ex was a great series for me, but I preferred Human Revolution above them all.

Binary Domain and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are hidden gems – a shame they weren’t more popular.

Metro is awesome – can’t wait for Exodus.

BioShock series is short and sweet – probably an easy one to knock out in a weekend.

Divinity: Original Sin is fun to Co-Op with a friend – highly recommended.

I got bored with XCOM after the same copy-paste missions, but it’s still pretty good.

Witcher 2 is fairly short and enjoyable. Witcher 3 ofc is awesome, but so much content you get drowned in it – eventually I’ll finish the damn thing.

    1. I’ve already finished the BioShock trilogy twice on both last-gen consoles, but picked up the Collection remasters on XB1 thinking I’d jump right in. It’s been on my shelf since launch day.

I’ve never played an XCOM, but I’m curious — especially after watching the Mario + Rabbids trailer.

Loved Witcher 3, but went through the core story on XB1 and picked up the GOTY edition on PS4 to play the DLC. So it’s just a matter of setting aside, oh, I don’t know, 150+ hours to play the campaign again before getting into the DLC stuff lol.

I hear great stuff about Metro. I’m shocked that I’ve never played them as a fan of single-player shooter stuff.

I’ve also never played a Deus Ex for very long. I picked up Invisible War on the OG Xbox and hated it, but it was my first foray into those types of open-ended games. I’d like to go back and play them all in order.

I loved NieR Automata and it made me want to go back and pay more attention to NieR on PS3. I played it before but had no attachment to the Drakengard stuff. I have about 30 hours in Drakengard 3, though, I just haven’t gotten around to finishing it. I think my PS3 controller is borked.

    1. Yeah, lots of RPGs in there lol. One day I’ll figure out that I’m not a teenager anymore and don’t have 100+ hours to regularly fit into one game. I mean.. I guess I do? I just choose to play more 10-ish hour games instead. *shrug* It never ends!

      1. I’ll have to figure out how to be neater about my gaming accomplishments. I’m near neurotic with book and writing stuff. I should stop giving gaming short shrift (not that I really do. I plan it out like everything else, but keep track I’m not so good).

  2. Lol I love how you said PC is your least played platform, followed by a massive list just for that ;)

It’s tough man. I was hoping to knock out 2 games from my backlog for June but didn’t happen.

  3. You are going to LOVE the Danganronpa games!! They are sooooo amazing and entertaining!
Also, the third game of Danganronpa will be released in September of this year, and I will most likely get it when it comes out. It’s such a good franchise, and I think you’ll like it as well. :)

      1. I totally understand how you feel.
When watching the first season of the Danganronpa anime, I was so busy with school and AP testing that I couldn’t really focus on finishing the anime and gameplays in time for school to end…so I just binged them once summer started. XD

  4. Maybe in 2018 I’ll start to jot down the games I have finished. Seeing the list in front of me may help break the habit of buying new stuff and never finishing what I previously bought. I bet the PC backlog is looking a lot bigger now after the Steam sale.

    1. This is my first year cataloging completions and it’s definitely helped me stay motivated in playing some of the older things I’ve had sitting around for quite a while. It’s nice to see progress.

Otherwise, it didn’t do much in keeping my from buying new stuff. Between the Nintendo Switch release, the Steam summer sale, and random sales for newer games, I’ve still added to the backlog in a way that’s like chucking water from a sinking ship using a small bucket.
