Friday! Video games! Let’s talk!
Last week, I mentioned that there wouldn’t be a Freakin’ Weekend post today because I was going out of town. Turns out that’s next week and I’m just really bad at reading a calendar. Next Wednesday I’ll be heading off to Maryland for a couple of days, then driving up to New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania for a much-needed vacation.
But hey, if someone out there wants to make a similar post in my absence, go for it!
After finishing off Beyond Good & Evil HD and Syberia, I moved on to Syberia 2. Although it released two years later, in 2004, the story takes place immediately following the original’s credits and contains all of the character and charm I’ve come to expect. This really is a fantastic series and it’s shaping up to be my favorite adventure game of all time.
Syberia 2 is supposedly shorter than the original, but I’ve been sharing the PC with my girlfriend since that’s her primary gaming platform. We picked up a bunch of stuff during the Steam Summer Sale, so she’s going through Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and its respective DLC (one of her favorite games last-gen, but we no longer keep those consoles hooked up regularly).
Since she’ll be occupying the PC mostly, I’m juggling Syberia 2 with the Xbox One remaster of the first-person shooter/horror hybrid Metro 2033. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the series and I’m surprised I never played them back in 2010. I tend to enjoy single-player shooters and have a particular fondness for horror games, after all.
The game takes place in Russia twenty years after a nuclear war made the surface of Moscow uninhabitable. Everyone lives underground now in the old Metro, which is broken up into different territories and is home to heinous bandits and hideous monsters known as Dark Ones.
The story is based on a Dmitry Glukhovsky novel of the same name, where you play as the 20-year-old Artyom — the son of a prominent figure in his section of the Metro who happens to be immune to the Dark One’s affliction. You navigate the Metro fulfilling the last wish of a family friend, occasionally breaching the snow-covered surface, tip-toeing around bandit camps, and shooting up Dark Ones with upgradable weaponry.
It does a lot of things very well, particularly storytelling and atmosphere. The Metro certainly feels lived in and makeshift, while the surface appears abandoned by everyone but the Dark Ones for quite some time. With radiation playing a factor, Artyom has to manage his oxygen mask by collecting air filters, while also avoiding having it broken in combat.
I’m roughly halfway through the game and mostly enjoying myself. There’s a chapter in the middle that takes you away from the horrors of the Dark Ones and places you into the horrors of what other humans are capable of, which was a bit dull by comparison.
It’s up in the air whether or not I’ll immediately jump into Metro: Last Light after finishing Metro: 2033. I usually like to take a break between sequels so I might take in a palate cleanser instead. I’ve been eyeing up Binary Domain, Crackdown, and Alpha Protocol lately, but that all largely depends on me not being lazy and hooking the Xbox 360 back up.
Otherwise, I may just continue chipping away at The Evil Within — the game’s motion blur gives me a headache after thirty minutes, but I’m determined to finish it up. I don’t want to start something particularly meaty, however, since I’ll be away from home for a week starting Wednesday.
What about you, folks? Have any gaming plans this weekend?
Just started playing Shovel Knight for the first time. Fun so far. Going to work on that this weekend.

Shovel Knight is incredibly good if you have any nostalgia for NES DuckTales.

Good stuff! I have that on my Wii U virtual console, I think.

That’s where I got it. I think I got drunk and bought it one night lol

Ah, drunk purchases. Woke up one morning to find I’d drunk-dropped $20 on Xbox One Monopoly.

Finished Party Hard (it was alright!) and bought Get Even which I’m keen to try.

Nice! I couldn’t finish Party Hard. It was too difficult for my puny brain to work around lol.
Get Even looks rad.

It was annoying at times (a couple of bugs screwed me over) but enough restarts get me a setup that I could manage to work with. It was too random with if you were spotted or accused though which needs work for the follow up.

I’ve been going through the Steam sale, and trying not to go too crazy spending. But I took advantage of the RedOut DLC sale, so I bought the new track packs. And I found something really quirky I won’t reveal just yet. I’ll be checking that stuff out. Possibly a few other things if I can’t resist the deals.

I’ve been selling odds and ends on eBay in anticipation of the sale. Made about $120 so far and put that into Steam.

I’m going to spend some time delaying my own packing to replay Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. I loved it whe nI played it years ago and I picked it up during the Steam sale. I know I won’t get it finished before I start travelling but I’m going to waste some time on it today.

My girlfriend was *obsessed* with VTM Bloodlines. It’s a very, VERY good first-person RPG.

I’ve just got to get the patch and everything working so that the game actually runs. Just like old times really.

Thankfully the patch is a simple install now, instead of having to manually edit things in the files. Glad folks still support the game to this day. There’s some really nice mods for it out there.

The patch might be simple to install but there’s still a lot of crashes and bugs and a whole bunch of ‘potential’ fixes. I’m still working through them. I’m thinking this is an after holiday job so might try for a replay of Baldur’s Gate 2, once it finishes installing.

Doh, that sucks. I picked up Baldur’s Gate 2 as well, but it’ll be my first time. I played the Diablo-style ps2 games a looooong time ago, but can’t remember any of it.

Baldur’s Gate 2 was the game that got me into PC gaming as a teen. I got a free demo of the first chapter with a DVD (don’t remember the movie at all) and I had to have the game.

I looked up a list of must-play PC games and Baldur’s Gate 2 was almost unanimously at the top of the list. Ultima Underworld 2 showed up a lot as well, but unfortunately that’s not on Steam. It’s on GOG, at least, and I *just* missed the GOG sale.
Any other must-play PC RPGs you recommend? I’ve pretty much played none of them lol.

Pretty much all of the Elder Scrolls games (though it open world isn’t your thing, pass on them). Dragon Age was awesome. If you don’t mind a bit of strategy with your RPG, Spellforce the Order of the Dawn was really fun (though not sure if that’s available anywhere these days and I haven’t played it in years). The probably the Fallout games though they are a bit more shooter focussed even though they are RPG.
I think even though I love them, I haven’t played a huge range of RPG’s because I tend to get fixed on one and sink a huge number of hours into it playing and replaying and trying different characters so its unusual for me to play more than one of these style of games within the same year.

Since the ES and Fallout games came to consoles, I’ve played most of them fairly extensively. I’ll have to look up Spellforce.
Thanks!

After I’m done with my next review I’ll be able to play some games this weekend. I want to play through Mankind Divided, but I just started playing KOTOR 1 and I plan on playing all the way the through. I’ll mostly be reading my new Witcher books that came in the mail :).

I haven’t played KOTOR since OG Xbox and don’t remember much about it. Definitely stoked to jump into the PC version at some point.

The PC version is good, but outdated. Kotor 2 has better support, but part 1 is still playable :). Doesn’t have controller support though :(

As long as it’s somewhat playable with KBM lol. If it’s too bad I’ll try some third party controller binding software.

It’s very playable with KBM. I just wish I could play it on m big screen some times :)

Have you tried any of the controller binding software?

Nope. It’s not a deal breaker for me since I play 90% of my games with MKB. I’m sure it’ll work with any controller binding software though.

Shadow Dancer on Mega Drive for me. One of those many games that I need to finish.
Steam sales…an easy way to lose money and build up a backlog 😀

Pretttttty much, haha. I mostly wanted the meaty RPG classics, but I don’t mind dropping a dollar or two on a 5-hour adventure game. They’re great palate cleansers.
Enjoy Shadow Dancer!

Played through the arcade mode of Nex Machina, that game is pretty awesome. Then I got sucked back into Horizon Zero Dawn, currently collecting metal flowers.

Next Machina looks great. I saw Brad from GB saying the final level is borderline unbeatable, which is unfortunate.

Particularly the boss. I think his quote in the quick look was “f$&@ing bonkers”. It was a test on the lowest setting, can’t imagine tougher settings. Still a good game.

I really liked Resogun and Dead Nation. I’m sure I’ll dig Nex whenever I get around to it. This reminds me that I never picked up Alienation.

I liked Alienation but I fell off of playing it after it felt like it wasn’t scaling properly. Enemies were way harder than I was prepared for and I couldn’t get any upgrades.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Dead Nation got that way if you didn’t hunt around for the upgrades, especially on the higher settings.

That’s true. Nex Machina was doable without upgrades but it sure was more difficult. Rookie/easy got crazy, the harder settings must be nuts.

Making more headway in FFV, while trying to figure out when I can play Type-0. I’m thinking Sunday mornings are going to be it, and this next week I’m off Monday and Tuesday. 4th of July FTW!
Vacation sounds like a blast! Where in NJ and PA are you heading?

I have family that retired in Belmar, NJ. Their son (my cousin) lives in Philly, so we’re meeting up for dinner.
