It’s the Freakin’ Weekend! So What are You Playing?

Friday! Video games! Let’s talk!

I’ve been mentally exhausted these last few weeks, which has unfortunately hindered my desire to play anything. I’m still at the same spot in Final Fantasy XIII that I was during last week’s post (just arrived in the open-world of Gran Pulse) and haven’t played anything else in the meantime. Stress sucks.

If you’re looking for something new (well, new to you) to play this weekend, there’s a great Flash Sale going on over at the PlayStation Store. There are quite a few PSone classics, like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and the Suikoden series, for $5 USD or less.

If you’re a fan of the weirdness that NieR Automata provides, Drakengard 3 is only $10 on PS3 — it’s more linear and nowhere near as polished, but it’s a good time.

Vita owners should also consider picking up the first two Danganronpa titles (unless you have the PS4 re-release), which are down to $7.50.

Instead of actually playing anything, I’ve just been watching a few different Let’s Plays on YouTube. I just finished up Cryaotic’s excellent/hilarious run through one of my favorite games of all time, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and started up his blind run (meaning he’s never played the game before, not that he’s actually playing it while blindfolded) of another favorite, Silent Hill 2.

Cry has a great voice, isn’t one of the annoying screamers, and has a ton of other Let’s Plays I’d like to check out in the future, like Clock Tower 3 and Asura’s Wrath.

I was scouring the internet for a good Let’s Play of the PSone horror title Clock Tower (an old point-and-click game where you avoid a guy murdering people with giant scissors) and found GG Gab’s channel. She has a ton of horror Let’s Plays uploaded, but the version of Clock Tower she played through was actually the SNES original… in Japanese. Turns out she lives in Japan, can speak and read fluent Japanese, and has all sorts of Japanese-only games on her channel that she translates while playing (sometimes subtitling them!).

Very rad stuff.

In an odd turn of events, I came to her channel ready to watch Clock Tower but ended up watching her play through Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I was still on a Metal Gear kick after watching Cryaotic take out Snake Eater, but he didn’t have any of the other games on his channel. Meanwhile, GG Gab has Metal Gear Solid 1-4, Peace Walker, and V: Ground Zeroes, so I’ll be busy for quite a while.

Although I’ve played through many of these games on my own, I’m always interested in watching other people experience them for the first time. It reminds me of watching my friends play through games while growing up, which happened a lot with single-player things like Resident Evil and Parasite Eve. There was just something cool about knowing a “certain part” was coming soon and wondering how they’d react, or if they’ll even enjoy it as much as I did when I played it.

But anyway, that’s my weekend in a nutshell. If I’m not doing homework, I’ll probably keep juggling Cryaotic’s Silent Hill 2 run and GG Gab’s playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. If I get out of this mental funk I’ll try and jump back into Final Fantasy XIII. I’ll also be reviewing the upcoming Nintendo Switch release of Azure Striker Gunvolt’s Striker Pack (the first two 3DS games ported to Switch, essentially), but I won’t have time for that until Tuesday at the earliest.

What about you, folks? What are you getting into this weekend?

  1. I’ve been having fun replaying RogueStormers. But with some nice finds I’ll probably spend part of my weekend playing the Shinobi series. I already had the IBM PC, and Master System ports of the original game, but now I have Revenge Of Shinobi, and Shinobi III to attempt. So aside from working, it’ll likely be a lot of ninjas.

  2. Don’t stress the stress. You’ll hit your stride and be fine.

Unfortunately Matterfall isn’t working out for me. It gets overly complicated at times and the screen gets too busy with things going on. Not sure if my break from this game will be temporary or permanent.

What is working for me is Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. I’m probably nearing the end of the game and I’m wishing I wasn’t because I’m really liking it.

After that I have the first Telltale Batman game to finish. Not sure how much of it I will get to.

    1. Thanks, dude. It happens from time to time and it’ll pass.

The more I watch of Matterfall, the less interested I become. I watched Dan play it on GB and it looks pretty, but I really couldn’t stand the 2D analog directional shooting + jumping with shoulder buttons in Rogue Stormers and know I won’t feel any different with this one.

The Lost Legacy looks gorgeous. I… still haven’t finished Uncharted 3 or 4, despite loving 1 and 2. Not sure what the hold up is.

I liked the first season of Batman enough to want to play the new season, but it wasn’t great. The detective stuff was kind of boring to me (click everything and find two that match! woo!) but thought the retelling in general was neat. Have you started the 1st season yet, or did you leave off at a particular episode?

      1. I got through the first episode of the Telltale Batman, which I already played on PC, so I’ve played it twice I guess. I’m in chapter 6 of Lost Legacy and look to try to finish it in the next day or so but I have real life things to do, dang it.

    1. Yeah, there are a few classics in there I’m tempted by — namely Suikoden 3 on PS3 and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for my Vita.

I picked up Planescape: Torment during the summer sale and haven’t started it yet, but it’s highly regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. Are you playing that one, or Torment: Tides of Numenera?

  3. Sorry to hear that you have lost your gaming mojo. Perhaps you lack energy to play due to the reduced calories you are consuming? Nah, who am I kidding. Anyone who plays FF13 for a few hours soon loses passion for gaming ;-)

It can suck when mood saps you of your motivation. That’s something that afflicts me all the time. I am listening to self help books to try an combat that. One book that made me ponder my mood swings is called the Chimp Paradox.

There are tons of games that I never get round to finishing. Maybe I should just concede that I’ll never return to them and just watch a Let’s Play instead. The tricky part is finding time to watch lengthy games.

Right now I am playing a game called Pyre. It’s a 3v3 sports game set in a Fantasy world with some light RPG and visual novel elements. The game is made by the team responsible for Bastion and Transistor.

    1. It happens from time to time, but it always passes. For whatever reason if I only have an hour or two of free time I can’t talk myself into playing an RPG because I don’t feel like it’s enough to really accomplish much.

That being said, I did play through Gunvolt on Switch in short bursts and just finished Episode Gladiolus in FFXV. So things have definitely happened since Friday.

One of the folks I podcast with really dug Pyre and I loved Bastion and Transistor enough that it’s on my radar… but aside from the neat visuals, the rest of the game didn’t grab my attention when I watched the first hour in a Let’s Play. I’ll probably grab it whenever it goes on sale, though.

      1. I can relate to your situation. My collection has plenty of long games that I have yet to start. On days that I only have one hour of free time it seems pointless to play a lengthy title so I just opt for quick Heathstone/Overwatch games instead.

Pyre is okay, but I am still searching for the quintessential sport RPG. Given how much Square milks Final Fantasy I am surprised they never made a standalone Blitzball game.

        1. Overwatch, Rocket League, and Smite were perfect when I just had an hour to dick around. Have you checked out Blood Bowl 2? Looks like Final Fantasy Tactics football. An online blitzball game would have been so rad, though.

  4. I finally set up my Switch and fired up MK8! It’s adorable and fun and I need to learn how to drift lol.

I finished watching Olizandri’s ME3 Let’s Play. I saw the official ending before, but he did the Citadel DLC, which was really cool, soooo I’m now looking for my next LP.

Finally got to play both FFV and Type-0 this weekend. I’m getting used to the battle system sort of lol. I’m waiting for the colosseum to open up do I can do that trick.

Hopefully school stress isn’t too bad this semester. It’s so hard to balance that 😑

    1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is super fun! Any idea what you’re going to watch? I vote for Christopher Odd’s Bloodborne, haha.

I’m glad you had some access to the PS4 over the weekend. It won’t be long now before the arena opens up and you can get overpowered.
