The Shadow of the Colossus Remake Looks Incredible in Action

Christopher Odd, one of my favorite Let’s Players on YouTube and Twitch, was given early access to the upcoming Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4 and it looks phenomenal.

I love the original game on PS2, and the PS3 remaster even more, but the remake is on a whole different level. It remains faithful to the original, in terms of tone and scale, and looks like a lot of TLC went into rebuilding it from the ground up.

He’s posted three episodes thus far, which span the game’s first four colossi: Valus, Quadratus, Gaius, and Phaedra.

If you’re a fan of the original and don’t mind spoiling the graphical upgrade, give them a watch below. He’s playing on the PS4 Pro in “Performance Mode,” which favors a steady 60 FPS over graphical fidelity, but it still looks breathtaking. I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

Episode 3

Since Shadow of the Colossus is considered a “boss rush” game (meaning it only consists of exploration and boss fights, no random monster encounters), it’s always fun to watch other people learn the nuances of each encounter. Observing Odd was certainly rewarding.

Are you excited for the Shadow of the Colossus remake? It’ll be available exclusively on PS4 on February 6th.

    1. Figuring out how to topple each colossi is its own reward, but you can still get the story and soak in the visuals in an LP. The Last Guardian doesn’t play very well and for me was all about the story and sense of scale. An LP for that is highly recommended. And Ico is a nice balance of both, so that’s the one I’d recommend playing yourself if given the chance.

      1. What was the gameplay in The Last Guardian like? I’ve really avoided looking up anything about it for fear of spoilers. I know it’s about training that big, adorable dog that’s on the cover, but that’s about it. If it’s about the story, I might just watch Olizandri’s LP of it, though I think Cry has one, too. Ah now this is the torn part, because I love both of those LPers for different reasons. I could also still play it after watching a Let’s Play.

          1. One of the blogger crew posted a review of it and pretty much confirmed what I knew, but worse. I KNEW the ending was sad, but apparently it’s also really brutal in terms of Trico. I’m not sure I’d be able to handle that :( I might watch an LP, but stop before it gets to that particular part. I’m one of those people who are like, “Oh they’re torturing people, no biggie,” but the instant a dog dies, I”m like “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS?!!! D:”

  1. I’ve been dying to play Shadow of the Colossus (I have it for PS2 and the remaster for PS3), but I haven’t gotten to it yet. What little I’ve watched of the videos you put up make me realize what a travesty this is.

Oh man, does that look good.
