Talkin’ Stuff: What Games Have You Started and Regret Never Finishing?

We’ve all abandoned a game before, be it on purpose or otherwise. Sometimes the game in question is so bad that we shelve it in favor of playing something that doesn’t make us want to rip off our skin and hang it in the neighbor’s closet. Other times, life gets in the way.

I cannot tell you the number of RPGs I’ve left unfinished because I had to either break away for a review, work, or took a vacation, and ended up abandoning them because I had no idea what was going on whenever I returned. It’s a staggering amount, I promise.

Final Fantasy XIII immediately comes to mind. After finishing up the excellent remaster of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on PS4 — which was my first time completing the offline MMO-like — I was motivated to jump into the most polarizing entry in the series for the second time. I had borrowed a friend’s Xbox 360 copy shortly after the game launched in 2009, but didn’t manage to finish the multi-disc-spanning adventure before he wanted it back. Now I was determined to fire up my own PS3 copy and finally see it through.

Only, I didn’t.

2017 was notoriously stacked with hot new game releases and I predictably buckled under the pressure. I made it to the open-world of chapter 11, roughly 42 hours in, but got sidetracked with the likes of Yakuza 0, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and the 115-hour masterpiece that was Persona 5. I just never found the time to go back and now that I’m nearly a year removed I feel as if I need to either abandon hope altogether or suck it up and start over yet again.

For what it’s worth, I really enjoyed what I played. I seriously doubt I’ll go back to the game unless the entire XIII trilogy is ported to current-gen consoles.

Persona 4 Golden is the definitive version of one of the single greatest RPGs of all time and I picked it up way back when I got my sexy blue Vita a few years ago. I’ve sank roughly 80 hours into the game since then, but having played the original version on PS2 back in the day I’m always pretty relaxed about putting it on hold in favor of playing something else.

It’s been three. fucking. years.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a fantastic game, spanning 100+ hours of open-world high fantasy, dangerous monsters, and delicious sensuality. After spending 150 hours with Geralt and his wonderful hair, flying the flag of Team Triss, and accepting the final story quest… I stopped. I was playing alongside my girlfriend and I’m not sure if we just weren’t prepared to say goodbye or what, but Geralt still awaits my return years after the game’s release.

I did pick up the Complete Edition on PS4 last year and fully intend on starting over at some point. We never got around to either of the two DLC chapters, so the motivation is definitely there.

What about you, folks? Have anything in your pile of shame that you started and regret abandoning?

  1. I’m terrible for abandoning games when I’m getting close to the end because I don’t want them to be over. It’s an awful habit I’m trying so hard to break out of.

I really regret not finishing Divinity Original Sin. I absolutely loved playing this game and I ended up stopping due to uni work and never got back into it. I played it with my boyfriend 3 years ago, and it’s definitely a game a regret not progressing. I guess I’ve never picked it back up as I was over 50 hours in and I really don’t want to play the same section for another 50 hours just to remind myself.

This also happened with The Witcher Series which I regret as The Witcher 3 looks so good and I don’t want to play it until I have completed the other two! I will get round to playing the whole series… one day!

    1. I hear you on The Witcher. I could *not* get into the first game at all so I skipped 2, but then 3 looked so good. I felt like I HAD to play the first two beforehand, but after trying the first game again I still couldn’t get into the combat and overall clunkiness. So I watched a story explanation video and had my GF give me the rundown on 2 before just jumping into 3.

I have Divinity on my shelf but I keep hearing how long it is (150 hours?) and get intimidated.

      1. I played The Witcher 2 before the first one. I got about 3 hours in and enjoyed it so I decided I wanted to play them in order. I felt the same and unfortunately just couldn’t get into the first game but I hope to try again.

Divinity is a very long game with so many options. After 30 hours we had only just left the starting town. It also doesn’t help that my boyfriend is one of these weird beings that likes to try every option on different characters before finishing the game even once. He made us have 3 different games on the go which got me so confused and I hated that… Probably another reason we stopped playing.

        1. Haha, oh no! I used to be super into getting trophies on PS4 and achievements on Xbox that I’d always go for them whenever my girlfriend and I played together. She absolutely hated it and actually stopped playing a few because of it. I stopped caring a few years back, thankfully!

  2. I have the best of intentions when it comes to finishing games but I tend to get distracted rather easily. Rather than give you a list that is way too long, the top three games I regret not finishing are: The Witcher 3, The Last of Us and Pillars of Eternity. One day I will finish them, one day…

    1. Two of those three are incredibly long, which I totally get. Lately, I’ve tried to use HowLongToBeat.com’s database see how long games are before committing to play them. I know I get sidetracked easily so I have to *really* be in the mood for the longer ones.

  3. I don’t think I ever really regret quitting a game. Normally if I’ve given up on it it’s for a good reason. Having said that, I’ve tried to play/finish the new versions of Alien Breed several times and keep bouncing off them.

    1. For me, the moment I come back to something after having been away a while and notice I have no idea what’s going on in the story, or how to play, I get it in my head that I either need to quit or start over.
