Organizing the RPG Backlog of Terror

Backlogs are intimidating, but what exacerbates the terror are those meaty RPGs that require weeks upon weeks of attention. I’ve been skimming through my list of games, both digitally and the physical adventures atop my shelf, and narrowed down the RPGs I’d rather play sooner rather than later; the cream of the crop, if you will.

This is in no way my complete list of RPGs, mind you. It’s a figurative mess here at the Trash household, so let’s get this list rolling. I’ll separate them by console since PC is the least of my worries. I also noticed I have nothing on the Xbox family of platforms worth concerning myself with. That’s kind of like a small victory, right?

Anyway, I’ll bold the ones I *really* want to play and leave the rest as ones I’d just like to get to at some point.

Any feedback/thoughts on the bolded ones? Any of the ones not bolded that you think needs to be prioritized? I’m open to suggestion!

My goal right now is to keep chipping away at Octopath Traveler until Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s DLC releases, then make that my top priority. Afterwards, I’ll slowly make progress on Octopath while focusing on either Ni no Kuni 2 or Dragon Quest XI. Whichever isn’t picked will go next, and then it’s on to whatever tickles my fancy.

*deep breath*

…please send help.

  1. This is my life, but more with the Humble Monthly titles I own. I just finished a post that will be going up in the next few days listing out every monthly title I own through 2017 and how many I’ve actually played, and it’s pretty sad. I think I’m going to start listing out every game I get through a monthly at the end of the year just to shame me into playing more of them :P

As to your list, definitely play Persona 4 Golden as soon as you can, you won’t be disappointed, I swear!

    1. Most of this stuff I buy on cheap sales, haha. When I list out the games I’ve bought and haven’t played, though, it’s quite depressing.

I love Persona 4, just haven’t finished the superior Vita version. I have about 50 hours in so far.

  2. Jheeze I thought I had a backlog. I dread to think what your backlog overall looks like!

I’m currently playing Octopath Traveler at the moment, just over 12hrs in. I like how each character have their own backstorys and quests, I enjoy story driven games. On top of that, the game is so artistic and really pleasant to look at as well as play. So you will enioy it very much šŸ˜Š

    1. It’s fucking awful, for lack of a better term lol.

I’m about 16 hours into Octopath and like it a lot. Having 8 different stories instead of one giant story makes it easier to play in small doses while still feeling like I’m accomplishing things.

  3. That’s a lot of RPGs! I have a fair few I need to get round to playing, but it’s nothing compared to this. I really need to get back into Tales of Berseria as I ended up stopping for no apparent reason, and I’ve still got NieR:Automata high on my priority list followed by the Witcher Series.

    1. Yeah, RPGs are my ultimate weakness, especially when they’re on good sales. I did the same as you, but with Zestiria. I liked it, made it to the final act of the story, and then had to put it aside so I could freelance a review. That review turned out to be a 50+ hour JRPG, so by the time I got back to Zestiria I totally forgot how to play and what was going on. Oops.

NieR Automata may be my 2nd favorite game of all time. It’s so, so good.

  4. That is a LOT of RPGs dude. The only advice I can give you is play your favorites first or play some of the shorter ones first. Since Ni No Kuni 2 is bold I vote for that one. It’s a fantastic game with really good gameplay and a good story too. I’ve been on a roll lately with my backlog. I completed Dead Cells, Skyrim (Switch), Final Fantasy 15, and Ni No Kuni 2 and I’m about 8 hours in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet. I’m also 30 hours in Assassin’s Creed Origins. I put everything on hold to play my new PS4 though :). I got Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-man. I’m currently waiting for Horizon to download as I type this.

      1. Fatal Bullet is my favorite SAO game so far. I really like it and I get to create my own dude this time around. The gunplay is good, the graphics are nice, and the story isn’t bad either. It’s worth the $20 I spent on it.

        1. Nice! I really liked Hollow Realization, especially the online co-op boss raids. Easily the most fun I’ve had in an SAO. I need to watch Accel World before grabbing AW vs SAO, though. I hear that one has a good story and neat concepts, but ultimately just feels like DLC for SAO Lost Song. They’re my so-called “guilty pleasure” games.

  5. I still haven’t gotten Ni no Kuni II yet, which is a shame as the first game is one of my favorites. Excellent story and great villains in that game.

    1. I never played the original and just happened to get Ni no Kuni 2 for my birthday last month. A friend of mine said the stories aren’t connected, which is nice. I own the original game on PS3 and it’s high on my list to play.

  6. Ys: Memories of Celceta should be highlighted. All of the Ys games are awesome. And being mostly action RPGs, I find they don’t take nearly as long to complete because you’re not going through spreadsheets of spell crafting, and management. You just go in, equip what you need at the time, and cut monsters down. But the RPG staples are there, and Celceta is no exception.

As for me I’m fortunate that most of the stuff I haven’t gotten to are typically shorter genres. Although I may try to dig into one of the RPGs I do have when I’m on the shelf from surgery in the coming weeks. I just got back from RetroWorldExpo too, and have some Atari, and Commodore goodness to look forward to. I also have a Super NES classic now, so I have Starfox 2 too.

    1. Nice! Plan on modding the SNES? I have mine loaded with NES, SNES, GB/C/A, SMS, Genesis, and Game Gear stuff.

When are you due in for surgery?

I really like what I played of Ys Origin and Ys VIII, but I’ve yet to finish a game in the series. I popped Celceta on my on my PSTV for later, though.

  7. Looks like you won’t be bored for the foreseeable future haha. I wonder how many days of gaming you have on that list, if you total up the average completion time for all of them. From the titles in bold I highly recommend Persona 4 Golden and Tales of Berseria.

  8. At least you have the next fifty years of your life planned #lolsob I should make a list like this. Right now I’m focusing on Octopath. Then I want to finish my replay of FFVI. After that I *should* try to play one of my Xbox RPGs since I haven’t even powered up that system since I got it. I have more than 60 hours in Octopath and I have a feeling I’m going to easily surpass 100. I was hoping to finish it before the end of my vacation, but I vastly underestimated the time.
