It’s the Freakin’ Weekend, So What Are You Playing?

Friday! Video games! Let’s talk!

I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather for a week or so, which explains the absence of last week’s wrap-up post. I’m feeling better though so this weekend will be all about playing review catch-up.

While I was dealing with headaches and whatnot, I got heavily into Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. I’ve never gotten hooked on a mobile game before and typically prefer my games on consoles, but it’s super solid and a lot of fun without burdening the player with microtransactions.

DFFOO

DFFOO isn’t like the Dissidia fighting series. Instead, it’s a turn-based RPG where your party members are drawn from nearly every game in the franchise, spinoffs and all. The story took about 10 hours to play through, which unlocked most of the roster. The rest were left to free single-player and co-op events, not gatcha-style lootboxes.

Instead, lootboxes are purchased with crystals that are thrown at the player regularly enough that I never once considered paying for them. They contain weapons and armor, some of which are character specific, and can be further leveled up by destroying the pieces you’re not using.

I still find myself logging in to take part in the game’s daily crystal event, which lets you repeat a certain quest 10 times that rewards you with a bunch of colored crystals. Each character falls into a crystal color and can have their stats strengthened and passive abilities unlocked by applying the appropriate crystals.

I have quite a few characters maxed out at level 50/crystal strength 50, with my main team being Vanille (best girl and my support character), Papalymo, and Cid. Each player can choose one character as their “support” that can be brought in by other players online to assist in battle. My Vanille has her max limit break (MLB) weapon and armor and can help dispel beneficial spells from enemies, grant BRV points to the party, and debuff enemy defenses, so she seemed like the ideal choice to main. I also liked her a lot in FFXIII, so the decision was easy.

homesweethome

Outside of DFFOO, I played quite a bit of Home Sweet Home and Punchline last night. I’ve seen Home Sweet Home through twice but this time the trophies are actually popping so I’m finishing it up before reviewing it over at The Well-Red Mage.

It has some great scares the first time through, some of the best atmosphere I’ve seen in a while, and interesting Thai folklore that’s explained in found documentation. It has a little jank in it, but overall it’s one of the better horror games I’ve played recently.

punchline

Punchline is a weird visual novel puzzle game where the main character’s spirit is removed from his body. It’s based on an anime by the same name, if you’ve ever heard of it. In the game, though, you have to enter various rooms within an apartment building (where you’re the only male) and do ghost stuff in order to trigger a specific chain of events that’ll eventually lead you into your old room and back to your body.

Finding the right sequence of events is basic trial and error, but the catch is that your character gets way too excited when he sees a girl’s panties. The girls often occupy the rooms you’re tinkering around in and if their panties are exposed the in-game camera will zoom in. You have to fight the camera using both analog sticks, but if you don’t succeed in time then the world is hit by a meteor and humanity goes extinct. Yep. That’s the story.

It’s cute, funny, lewd, and somewhat exhausting, but I’m a sucker for light-hearted visual novels and adventure-style puzzles. The story is kind of interesting, which is surprising, which plays out through storyboard dialogue sequences and well-animated anime cutscenes. I’m not sure how long it is, but hopefully I’ll have both reviews finished within the next few days.

What about you, folks? Any plans this weekend? I already miss Halloween.

  1. I’ve been ill for over two weeks so I feel for you being ill. They’ll tell you that you can’t get the flu from a flu shot but I’ve been sick as hell with “flu-like” symptoms and I got a sinus infection on top of it. Not good times but getting better and I hope you are too. In my downtime I’ve been playing Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s good but I don’t like having to ride my horse all over the place and possibly getting ambushed on the way. My overall progress is about 20% at this point so I’ve still got a lot of game ahead.

  2. I’m also recovering from a nasty cold, so I’ll be taking it easy this weekend. I’ll probably keep grinding away at Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but I’m trying to take my time with it and not get exhausted with open world games. When I need a break, I’d like to start a JRPG of some sort, but I own about a million of them and need to narrow down which one I wish to start up.

  3. Sounds like they tried to do something interesting with that FF spinoff!

I just looked at a weird mobile game that saw re-release on the Switch called No Thing. It was oddly compelling. I’ll likely stream some more of the DUSK beta late night Friday. I also found a C64 mini, that I hope to play a bunch of to review.

  4. Home Sweet Home is one I’d happily watch a Let’s Play of as it strikes me as a bit too wonky for me to want to play.

I’ve been playing Call of Cthulhu (in fact I finished it an hour ago), but having a 2-week-old now, I don’t see me having a huge amount of gaming time. I can see getting Diablo 3 on Switch being a good idea though.

    1. Diablo 3 is a game I played a ton on Xbox One and PS4 and one of the few games I’d consider double dipping on for Switch. It’s so good and having that loot-filled game play hook on the go sounds awesome. I was really hoping Cthulhu would be good but the reception seems mostly negative on Twitter (not surprising, of course).

      1. Cthulhu is alright. It’s got some cool features, like being able to solve most puzzles in a number of ways based on your skills, but it’s janky and short. I really wish I’d waiting for a sale.

  5. I don’t usually game on my phone either and I loved Opera Omnia. I didn’t max anyone, but I really enjoyed playing it before bed back when I was homeless. It’s a fun little game to play and I actually prefer it to the console versions of Dissidia.

This weekend will be all about Kingbreaker: The Witcher Tales with a small amount of Soul Calibur VI sprinkled with a hint of Dragon Quest 11. I haven’t play Dragon Quest in a few days now because I’ve been all over my PC again, but I’ll get back to it eventually. That horrible soundtrack keeps me from wanting to boot the game up which is a shame because I really like everything else about the game.

I just purchased a new game from Steam called Darkwood. It’s a horror game with a top down view that has me scrounging for supplies during the night, but it’s super creepy and has an interesting story (so far) that has me questioning whether or no my dude is crazy or not. It’s pretty good and I might play that this weekend if I get through Thronebreaker. Right I’m just counting down the days to Pokemon: Lets’ Go.

      1. You’re nothing missing out on anything by not playing Dissidia NT. The gameplay is nice, not better than Opera Omnia, but the lack of game modes and randomized unlockables (aka loot boxes) killed the game for me.

  6. Spending spree this week so now have RDR2 and Assassins Creed odyssey. Was hoping RDR would hook me, but AC:O is just so dang fun. I read complaints about level gating but that and the gear drops/upgrade mechanic are one of the best parts of the game. RDR meanwhile – it’s like I just want to know all the mechanics, not go thru a 5hr intro that you can’t skip that leads you (slowly!!!) thru all the ‘how to’s’ of the game. Although the story is good from the get go.

  7. I bought Punchline on release, but need to go back to it. Don’t like the trial and error gameplay, but the funny story is cool. Maybe I should just watch the anime? This weekend I am playing another anime related game – Angels of Death on the Switch.

  8. Sorry to hear about your cold. ‘Tis the season for them, sadly.

I’ve mostly been sinking my time into RDR2 for the review, but I’m still trying to take my time just for my own enjoyment :)

Want to fit a bit more of Odyssey into the mix. I was really loving it and the hunt for loot was great fun :D

  9. Well, first, glad to hear you’re feeling better! Being sick sucks, and it’s worse when you don’t feel up to doing the things you want to do.

Second, I’ve been toying with some mobile games- mostly Fire Emblem Heroes, Dissidia Opera Omnia, and Dragalia Lost which have all been pretty great.

I’ve still been working through Claire but hit a horror burnout for a few days so I went back to Atelier Lydie and The Lost Child (which I know is totally Lovecraftian based horror, but it felt different, I guess?)

Given our Twittee conversation recently, though, I may try to trudge through Clock Tower 2 this weekend!

  10. I’m really late to the Friday party, but I think the idea of FF on mobile is intriguing. My phone is super old so I don’t know that I’d ever be able to play some of the newer mobile games, but my heart wants to.

    1. I use an older Samsung Galaxy tablet and it runs it just fine, so I’d give it a go. There are three graphical options to choose from when you start it up, so maybe dumping it down to the lower end might help performance. It’s free, fun, and doesn’t pressure you into spending any money at all. I have nearly 100 hours in and haven’t felt the need to dip into the wallet in any way.

  11. I downloaded Opera Omnia but only played a little bit of it. I’m curious if your first characters are randomized or the same for everyone. I’m not sold on it quite yet, but I can see its appeal! I just got my last special job class for Octopath. I’m finishing up the side quests before I head for the “real” end.
