It’s the Freakin’ Weekend, So What Are You Playing?

Friday! Video games! Let’s talk!

Busy weekend for me, so I’ll keep it short. Throughout the week I gave my Switch a lot of love and finished up Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (excellent), Minit (also excellent), and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (equally excellent).

I ended up reviewing Superbrothers, which you can read here if you’d like! It’s a rad adventure game with a heavy emphasis on music (the OST is *incredible*), great pixel art, and an oddly told tragic narrative. I loved it.

Minit is like if Undertale and The Legend of Zelda had a baby and each of your lives only lasted 60 seconds. Everything you collect and all of your upgrades persists through death and you can unlock different starting points, so it’s all about discovering new locations, power-ups, and figuring out how to progress further and further with each death. I love its simplistic, monochromatic art style, its sense of humor, and found it to be one of the most interesting games I’ve ever played.

My weekend will mostly be spent out and about, but I’m currently juggling the wonderful little bard adventure Wandersong with Jack ‘N Jill DX, Shadow of Loot Box, and I Am The Hero on the Switch. I’m really trying to wrap up as many smaller indies as possible and try to give them coverage before the holidays. That way if folks get the console for Christmas and want more info on the smaller, cheaper games, I have them somewhat covered.

I’m not here to sell games, of course. I just like talking about the ones I’ve played (if I have time) or the ones given to me by smaller developers.

Otherwise, I do have another batch of games and amiibo that I’m putting up for sale within the next few days. I posted pictures on Twitter, so if any of you fine folks are interested in anything (NA shipping only, but I’d make an exception if possible) leave a comment or shoot me a DM on Twitter and we’ll work something out. ^_^

That about does it for me. What about you, folks? Any gaming plans this weekend? As we get closer to the holiday it’s getting more and more hectic, so hopefully you’re getting some “you” time in.

  1. Picked up relatively cheaply DQ11 during Black Friday and played for about 10hrs and can honestly say I’m not a fan of JRPG’s if this represents a pinnacle. Give me Skyrim or Dragon Age:Inquisition any day over this. So back to AC:O which i’d taken a short break from!

    1. Ehhhh, Dragon Quest is an example of classic, traditional JRPGs, but I wouldn’t say it represents modern ones very well. It’s *very* old school. I’d recommend checking out something like Persona 4 or 5, Ni no Kuni 2, or Octopath Traveler (if you have a Switch for the latter). They’re JRPGs with modern quality-of-life stuff thrown in.

I like both genres but have to be in the mood for a JRPG. I prefer something like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or The Witcher and I’m always in the mood for those, though.

        1. Dragon Quest 11, like Trash already stated above, is a really old school JRPG. It’s by no means a modern take on the genre. It’s, in my opinion, one of the worst Dragon Quest games that I’ve played, but I still really enjoyed it because I love the series. I would recommend checking out Final Fantasy XV, Ni No Kuni 2, Project Octopath (if you have a Switch) and Xenoblade 2 (Switch) :).

  2. I’ll mostly be on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey this weekend. I’m in love with the game and I love how big it is. There’s a ton for me to do and I don’t see myself finishing it any time soon. I also recently got back into ESO. I bought the new Summerset expansion and I can’t wait to start it, but there’s a few things I want to do before that with my Dragonknight.

Minit sounds interesting, but I’m not sure how much I’ll like it. I’ll probably watch a lets play of it though to help me make up my mind :). How is I Am the Hero? I’ve been curious about that game.

    1. I’d watch Giant Bomb’s Quick Look of Minit to get a general idea of what’s going on. The fun for me was discovering how to proceed and watching a full-on LP, or someone who has already gone through the game before, may take away from that.

I haven’t started I Am The Hero yet since I’m still working my way through Wandersong. It’s a bit longer than I anticipated.
