With so many different genres represented in the Xbox GamePass program, I noticed a lot of games that either personally seemed interesting or people that I know really enjoyed. The problem was that those games tended to fall well out of my wheelhouse.
I’m anti-social for the most part and haven’t really played games with other people (strangers or otherwise) since my heavily addicted WoW days in 2010, and, to a lesser extent, Destiny during its Taken King era. As time went on, my anxiety steered me even further away from PVP-focused games while some of my good friends continued to enjoy them immensely.
In an attempt to combat this, last year I challenged myself to play at least one game of Smite, Overwatch, and/or Paladins per night. The experiment worked out pretty well and I did end up digging Smite a LOT more than I thought I would, but ultimately abandoned the idea for no reason in particular.
This gave me a new idea.
What if I picked a game that met the above criteria and spent a week playing it for at least an hour per day? Whether I enjoyed it or not, I’d spend a minimum of an hour a day or seven hours within the week and then chronicle my overall experience here on the blog.
I want to cover things like my win/loss record and favorite hero to play in something like Bleeding Edge, maybe talk about how I learned the ropes in Sea of Thieves or something.
So, naturally, I took to Twitter and posted a poll of the four games I’d like to cover the most. Since I’ve already played a little Bleeding Edge, my fingers were crossed for it to triumph in the poll, but it clearly lost by a significant margin.
Dead By Daylight edged out Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2, and totally decimated my personal choice, Bleeding Edge. Thank you to everyone on Twitter who voted, by the way.
Dead By Daylight, if you’re unfamiliar, is a multiplayer horror game where one person plays the killer while the other four attempts to complete objectives and ultimately escape the level. What makes it so enticing is its licensing with major horror franchises that let you pay to unlock characters from Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm St., and (coming soon) Silent Fucking Hill. Overall, it seems very similar to the Friday the 13th game.
Right now I’m in the middle (or nearing the end) of Far Cry 3 and I don’t want to begin “A Week With…” until I finish it. I’ll be sure to post on Twitter each night to recap my progress before writing up my big recap.
I’m excited for this idea since it gives me an excuse to not only write more but step outside of my comfort zone and maybe end up enjoying things I normally wouldn’t. I’ve never been a big fan of PVP games, RTS, city builders, and sim games, so each week I’ll pick some new ones out of the GamePass lineup and let Twitter choose for me again.
Since Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 tied this time, the 2nd poll will just be between those two and I’ll continue dipping my toes into Bleeding Edge in my own time. More people need to play that game, damnit! It’s good!
