2018 Backlog Update

Throughout 2018, my goal is to once again put a significant dent in my gaming backlog. Last year I managed to knock out 69 games, which, of course, included newer releases, but now I’d like to put even more emphasis on the games I’ve already paid for.

I’ve organized my backlog by platform, but rather than setting unrealistic expectations and lumping everything I own into a gigantic, daunting list, I’ve instead decided to narrow it down to the ten games per platform I’d like to play most.

That’s… still pretty unrealistic, yeah. But at least it’s easier to look at. Oh, and since I’m bad at committing to things I’ve added a “bonus” pick to some of the lists. I also went a little nuts on PS4.

So yeah, not much to knock out at all. Right? Right…? Fuck me, I’ll never find enough time for these! That’s not what’s most important though. It’s all about finding time to enjoy your hobby. Thinking too much about what you “have” to play and not what you “want” to play kind of makes gaming feel like a job, which is… not fun? So I’ll just take it in stride, play what coincides with my current mood, and hope I knock some games out before 2018 is over.

I also planned on revisiting some of my favorites, like the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, maybe Undertale and NieR: Automata, before the year is up. So it’s not always about new experiences, but what I like to refer to as “comfort food games.” I have a whole SNES Classic full of rad stuff I’d like to get to at some point, but I’m in no hurry. I’m not dead yet.

What does your backlog look like? Is it as atrocious, if not worse?

  1. Mother of god, that is a backlog… Mine has like 8 games in it lol. Over time I have arrived at the number of 40 hours a month of game progress I can make, some months it’s higher, some it’s lower, so I check HowLongToBeat and either bump a game or don’t buy it. That’s basically my policy for this calendar year.

I’m extremely doubtful that we’ll see a main series Pokemon game and/or Metroid Prime 4 this year, so I’m playing cleanup on the games I’ve added to my collection the past few months. Looking forward to doing so, it’ll probably take me till May to do it!

    1. I’m fully expecting a new Pokemon on Switch this fall since the last two entries have been remasters (ORAS & USUM), but that gives me until the fall to do some damage. There are quite a few PS4 games I’m looking forward to this year as well, like God of War and Detroit, but as far as major RPGs go I can’t think of any off the top of my head aside from Ni no Kuni 2, which I’m okay skipping since the first game is still in my backlog. This year doesn’t *seem* as big as 2017, but who knows?

  2. That’s quite a list. Some good games on there so I hope you can get through at least some of them. Do take time to play what you want to play including the old favourites/comfort food games as that keeps things fun.

  3. Oh, good luck to you! I have like 10 games in my backlog and even that feels overwhelming!

Over the last year or so I’ve stopped looking at second-hand games and Steam sales, and have made a commitment to complete (or at least play) the games I already own.

  4. I think as collectors we often get backlogs. My list of “Never played” is fairly low. My list of “Never beaten.” on the other hand is a bit more considerable. The fact that I finally got my Switch is not going to make this situation easier. Though I am absolutely enjoying it thus far.

  5. Best of luck on the backlog. I personally gave up on even keeping a list. If I end up playing a game then so be it but if I never get to it I don’t worry about it. A friend of mine gets on my case about having never played Red Dead Redemption, he is shocked by my indifference to the fact. I have no plans to play that game nor the forthcoming game and I’m ok with that. In days when I could’ve exploring unplayed games I find myself playing Mass Effect: Andromeda again. Think of me what you will. :)

    1. I hear that a lot about RDR, but I just don’t like Rockstar’s games so I’ve never felt compelled to play it. I’ve been thinking about revisiting Andromeda if I find time to play the original trilogy again this year. I want to check out the pc versions and EA Origin is a cheap sub.
